. >>> to the disaster in japan now. the contamination both in and around the that damaged nuclear plant is growing. today the amount of radiation in the water that's been flooding the plant reached a level 100,000 times higher than normal. and today, plutonium, another radioactive substance, was detected in the soil around the complex. the contamination is believed to be the result of a partial meltdown in the core of that complex. all of this, of course, follows that march 11th earthquake and tsunami in japan. because of that disaster, health authorities all over the country and in our area are monitoring air and water quality. this afternoon, maryland officials announced a very small amount of radioactive iodine was detected in a rain water sample taken in baltimore. but as chris gordon reports now, authorities say it does not pose a health risk. >> reporter: our tap water is being tested to make sure it is safe, and officials say it is. the maryland and virginia health departments are monitoring samples that have been taken from reservoirs, rivers and rain water to check whether radiation from

pay pending the outcome of this investigation. >>> a couple of workers were injured in northern japan today when they stepped in radiation contaminated water. it happened at one of the damaged nuclear plants there. contamination fears are also triggering a run on bottled water all over that country. lee cowen has our report. >> a little bit of good news today out of japan and that's that the drinking water in tokyo, anyway, has now been deemed safe to drink, although that seems to have added to the confusion, because 24 hours later it wasn't safe to drink, now it is. people are still going out and stockpiling water, even though the government has asked them not to do that. they have also tried to allay fears to deliver water to 81,000 or so families who do have children you said under 1 years old. but a lot of people aren't taking chances at this point. back at the plant, three workers we are told were injured, two had to be sent to the hospital because they were exposed to radiation. not radiation in the air, but these workers were dragging an electrical cable into the reactor to try

in and around the nuclear facility in northern japan that was damaged in a tsunami recently. a record level of radiation has been detected in sea water near the fukushima plant. it is more than 3,000 times what is allowed by law. plant officials believe it leaking from one of the reactors there. one of the reactor that's has melted through its protective container. japan's emperor and his wife tried to console some of the thousands of displaced residents today them spent about an hour at a temporary shelter near tokyo. it was his first such visit since the earthquake and tsunami hit the area on march 11th. >>> there are more questions the security of air cargo tonight after a fake bomb troofld a cargo plane. the plane was flown from the britain to turkey two weeks ago. a u.s. official told nbc news, the incident appears to be the result of a family feud. that parts of the phony bomb were made of play-doh. the fake bomb was placed in a wedding cake box. it was supposed to be delivered to a wedding reception. a turk usual man dropped off the box at a ups office two weeks ago. the phony bomb w
